Saigon Cinnamon

6/21/2012

I recently read some of the amazing health benefits of Cinnamon that I never knew about. But not all Cinnamon is the same.

The most common type is Ceylon (typically what's in grocery stores and usually not labeled). Ceylon is the least effective type so you want to look for Saigon Cinnamon. I just found it in my grocery store made by McCormick Spices.

Now what are these health benefits? Cinnamon has been shown to effectively lower blood glucose levels as well as bad cholesterol. If you're eating a meal that's high on the glycemic index (say pancakes and syrup) then one and a half teaspoons of Saigon Cinnamon sprinkled on top can lower the glycemic index of that meal by 29%.

Spikes in blood sugar can make you store fat and are especially dangerous where Type 2 Diabetes is concerned. Cinnamon also helps keep food in your stomach longer, making you feel fuller.

WARNING: No more than one and a half teaspoons a day! Saigon Cinnamon is also a blood thinner and can be dangerous if you overdo it!
