WATCH: Formula 1 Car Speeds Through Lincoln Tunnel

8/17/2012

ABC News/Formula 1(NEW YORK) -- The Lincoln Tunnel, which connects New York and New Jersey, can make for one of the longest 1.5 mile commutes of all time. But that wasn’t the case for David Coulthard, who managed to speed through the 1.5 mile tunnel in his Formula 1 race car at a breathtaking pace of 190 miles per hour.

Coulthard, the current Red Bull Racing Formula 1 Running Show Car driver, got through the tunnel in less than 30 seconds, recording the entire high-speed journey from a camera in the car’s cockpit.

The Lincoln Tunnel was closed down for the stunt, all part of promoting the upcoming Formula 1 races in New Jersey and New York.

“The Grand Prix next June is not an official race yet,” said Leo Parente, a former Formula 1 racer covering the event for Youtube’s Drive channel. “Generally, Formula 1 races are not official until the beginning of the year, because local business or politics may interfere with planned races. Events like this are a way to build excitement for the race and keep it from being canceled.”
