John Isner Wins Opening-Round Match At U.S. Open

Clive Brunskill/Getty Images(NEW YORK) -- Ninth-seeded John Isner defeated Xavier Malisse of Belgium in the first round of the U.S. Open Wednesday, 6-3. 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (9). The four-set match lasted for nearly three hours.

The 27-year-old Isner took the last match point when Malisse misplayed an easy backhand volley into the net. Moments later, Isner captured the victory, improving his record to 37-13 in tiebreakers on the season.

Isner is the top-ranked American in the tournament.
