Pakistan: Girl Granted Bail in Blasphemy Case

9/7/2012

RIZWAN TABASSUM/AFP/GettyImages(ISLAMABAD) -- A Pakistani judge has granted bail to a 14-year-old mentally challenged Christian girl accused of blasphemy.

Rimsha Masih was arrested two weeks ago after she was accused of burning pages of the Quran.

The case, which garnered worldwide condemnation from several Christian groups – including the Vatican – took a twist earlier this week when the imam of a nearby mosque was arrested, accused of planting the evidence.

Despite his arrest, Rimsha remained behind bars.

Today the judge granted her bail at roughly one million Pakistani rupees – or roughly $10,500 USD.

She did not appear in court today.  For security reasons, her lawyers would not say where she is headed.
